Travel

To me, travel is a complex idea. It is not a vacation, even though it takes you away from the familiar day-to-day events of your life. It is far, far more than that. Travel is adventure. It is a collection of experiences that open your eyes to the ways of the world. It exposes you to new ideas and new ways of thinking. It helps you meet new people and discover new ways of doing things. It is an immersion into how other people live and act, love and work, interact and value. It reveals unbelievably fantastic landscapes. It helps you to push your physical boundaries.

In short, if done right, it pushes your comfort zone and helps you grow intellectually, emotionally and physically.

Travel has exposed me to climbing, via ferrata, caving, canyoning, scuba diving and whitewater rafting… all different ways to explore and experience those great big landscapes I’ve come to love so much. It has introduced new foods and ways of cooking to my repertoire. It has let me explore vast archaeological ruins and deep underground subway systems. It has taken me to Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Hungary, Austria, Greece, Switzerland, the U.K., Egypt, Turkey, Israel, Bali, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Chile, Costa Rica, the United States, Mexico, Peru and Belize.

Come & take a look around as I take to fascinating places and share with you some of the experiences we’ve had along the way.

Peru 2016

Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail had long been on my life bucket list. What we discovered, trekking and travelling through Cusco and its surrounding area, the Sacred valley and the Andean highlands, is that Peru is far more than Machu Picchu. It is adventure. It is outstanding fusion food. It is a diverse culture that still reveres the Incas and their legacy, and yet it is a culture that has been profoundly impacted by the migration of people through its borders, from the Spanish, the Chinese, the Japanese… and now by the tourists of today.

This section of my blog revisits some of my favourite photographs and memories of our years spent discovering the unique places of the world and the hidden recesses of our innermost selves. Each post takes one photo, and tries to capture that memory so that you can experience what it was like at the moment in which it was taken, and what it has come to mean for me in the years that followed.

Tofino is one of my favourite places in Canada to travel. A relaxing place it has just the right blend of beautiful scenery, adventure activity possibilities and fantastic places to eat & sleep.

Vancouver, BC 2017

Vancouver is, perhaps the most beautiful city in all of Canada. I have been there many times over the years. This page contains an overview of the city for those who have never been there, and it is a collection of posts from our 2017 trip there.

IMG_5214Venice & The Dolomites 2017

We carefully planned our trip to the Dolomites, after having played in Arco, a small, athletic & outdoorsy, climbing obsessed town in the Dolomites back in 2015. There we tried via ferrata (meaning, “by the iron way,” a style of climbing that originated during World War One as a safer way to move troops through the treacherous mountain areas). The trip involved starting and ending in Venice, a wonderfully historic and beautiful city built on the mud flats of a shallow lagoon. Go to this page to explore highlights from our adventures there.

Utah and Nevada 2018

This trip saw us sport climbing, hiking and biking through the canyon lands of the Nevada and Utah deserts. There we explored Red Rocks, Zion and Moab.
